Largely due to the failure of his forth novel, The Armageddon Rag George R.R. Martin took a ten-year writing hiatus, starting in 1986.
But in 1991, he was inspired by a sudden, all too vivid image which sparked his imagination, and eventually marked his triumphant return.

”I started with a vision of a scene where some wolf pups are discovered being born with a dead mother in the snow. It just came to me very vividly, and I wrote it. I didn’t know what story it was part of or what world it was

I loved the way the story was broken up into sections by the view point of different characters. So each chapter was with a different character. This made the book flow much more smothly I think then the traditional way. That was a good call on the writer part to do this it helps with the flow of the book. The character devlopment was good. They eveolved from the beginning of the book to the end each of them having differnt roads to travel. I also liked the including of the direwolves in the equ ...more

Finally I am finished. I knew going into this book that it would be a long epic read. However,I was not prepared for it to feel so long. I knew little about this book from the start, I knew it was a popular series on HBO and so many people (including most of my friends here on goodreads)loved this book. I am not a huge fan of Sci-Fi but I loved the Lord of the Rings, and I really liked stories of knights and dragons so I thought I would give this a try. It was not for me.

So I worry about writing

The first chapters, I find it quite hard remembering all the names, from which kingdom, or lineage. I was able to get the hang of it after learning that there is an appendix at the back.
It was pretty neat the way each chapters were introduced as the characters. That way, no matter how many the characters & events are, a reader always keep track.
Overall, the book is absorbing & gripping. Given its 800+ page, it was never dull. The author has beautifully dressed the characters like, Sansa, in a

This book and show are amazing. The characters in the book are well fleshed out, and the plotting and pacing of the story is perfect in my opinion. It is slow when it needs to be, and fast when it needs to be. This is a very violent adventure with POV chapters. This is one of my favorite fantasy books I've read I think. All the characters are really well developed. And there is some sex in here, just warning people, not that I mind the sex, which I don't. I recommend this to lovers of the show, ...more

After being introduced to HBO fantastic Tv-series of the same name I simply just had to read it. I wanted even more of it. I Loved the fact that the chapters are divided into names. It makes it easier to keep track of the huge gallery which appers in this book.
The only down side, which i suppose is not really a down side at all, was that i read it just after finishing the first season. As the Tvseries follows the book so closely it was like watching it again. I would recommend it to everyone
