What is it about ghost stories that makes me want to analyze the bejeebies out of them? Having read The Turn of the Screw not that long ago, I found myself making constant comparisons between them. The Haunting of Hill House is far and away the winner in this contest. Shirley Jackson's use of language is much more effective and, well, haunting. The internal logic of the story also works better, although I'm not altogether certain it is internally consistent. There are still some ambiguities that
