Way to go with the twist at the end. I didn't see that one coming! This was based on a true story and I enjoyed reading this book. It was well written. However, sometimes I wanted to hear more stories of what happened there. That would have made the book a little better. Still a well deserved 4 points. ...more

this book is historical fiction but based on a true story about a 'reform school' and the reality of racial injustice where many young boys were mistreated for years. one of the main characters (since there is a twist i wasn't expecting that comes later on in the book that i am not going to talk about because that would be spoilery) had such a bright future, being smart and hard-working, but unfortunately due to being in the wrong place at the wrong time and obviously due to the color of his ski ...more

I looked forward to reading this book. it is part of our history and shows how far we have come in race relations and makes us aware that we still have far to go. The story is of two boys sentenced to a hellish reform school in Jim Crow-era Florida. This is a fictional story based on the real story of Dozier School for Boys, a reform school in Marianna, FL that operated for 111 years and warped the lives of thousands of children.
