An okay read for the week. Found it sometimes a little over dramatic and the writer really wanted to make a hero story. A little over the top at times.

this was a book club pick and my first read by this author even though she has many other books. guess i should start checking out some of the others because although this one definitely wasnt a happy story i did like it. i think i am gonna have to spoiler cut already since most of my thoughts will be for anyone who bothers to read this and hasnt read this book yet.

trying to survive during the great depression seemed like an almost impossible task but being an unloved and unwanted spinster daughter and then eventually and unloved and unwanted wife probably didnt make things any easier for Elsa, the main character. her parents were so cruel to her and because she was starved for love and attention she didnt even realize that Rafe, her soon to be husband, was taking advantage of her and didnt really love her. well i guess he shoudlve been more careful and not gotten her pregnant then, right? so then she gets disowned by her parents, Elsa and Rafe are forced to marry, and although they try to make a life together, he is clearly unhappy and eventually abandons his family, never to be seen again. luckily at that point Elsa had a good relationship with his parents and even though their son left all of them, they become close and stay together until Elsa realizes she needs to leave the dust bowl dry and barren farmlands because her son's health was at risk and they could barely feed all of them. so, they go west to California just like Rafe had wanted them to do before he left them to hopefully better their lives, only to find so many others trying to do the same thing so they seriously struggle to live out there, too. and finally, just when Elsa and her kids were finally starting to make progress and find happiness, she was sadly taken away from them for fighting to make things better for her family. i understand that not all stories have happily ever afters, but it really bothered me that she was killed off just when she finally had found someone who seemed to genuinely care about her and she was finally happy. all her life she sought after love and acceptance and just when she finally had found it with Jack, it was all over for her. i do think she had to be a strong woman in order to survive so many hardships during this timeframe, and like i said although it was not a happy book, it was definitely worth reading and i will add more of this author's books to my never-ending to read list. Before reading this book I knew little about the Great Depression and even less about the Dust Bowl. This book really puts you in the shoes of the main characters and you feel their pain and hopelessness alongside them. The heart-rending moments were simple, devastating and beautifully written. It was also so sad to see attitudes to 'outsiders' that still very much exist today albeit shifted to new groups.

I teared up multiple times including when reading the author's note (a first for me).
