"It happened every year, was almost a ritual."

Well that was the chonkiest book I've read in a while--so much information. It was certainly a page-turner though, at least after the first 100 pages.

I will say this: Do not pick up this book if you lack patience, or if you do not like a ridiculous amount of detail. This is probably the most thorough author I've ever read. We are talking banal daily rituals, grocery lists, household items, and any other boring stuff you can think of. I'd be rich if I "It happened every year, was almost a ritual."

I will say this: Do not pick up this book if you lack patience, or if you do not like a ridiculous amount of detail. This is probably the most thorough author I've ever read. We are talking banal daily rituals, grocery lists, household items, and any other boring stuff you can think of. I'd be rich if I had a dollar for every time a cup of coffee is mentioned, but at least I learned that in Swedish culture offering a guest a cup of coffee is expected, and not accepting said cup is considered rude. I think I'd have to avoid going to other people's houses because that's way too much caffeine for me.

With that being said, I loved this book. Some parts were difficult to read, but once the world-building and character development are out of the way, this story really unfolds in a beautiful way. I found myself putting it down, only to pick it up and skim forward until the wee hours of the night. I just couldn't wait to finish it, but it was hefty; luckily the discipline to not just watch the movie was a necessary quality I just so happened to possess. However I wouldn't have complained if it was about 100 pages shorter.

There are a ton of characters, and at first they were a bit difficult to keep straight. It did get easier as I got farther into the book, but it was a still a doozy to absorb. Luckily I did like the three main characters, and most of the secondary characters, but there were a few unlikables mixed in. In hindsight some of the characters were unnecessary, but I'm sure Larsson had his reasons for including them.

I was originally worried that this would end on a cliffhanger, due to being a part of a trilogy, but that wasn't the case. The plot came full circle, and some people will be content just reading this one. I decided to read all three originals, but now that I am finished with the original trilogy, I think I will go on and read books 4 through 6 as well. I'm curious to see if his son, who continued writing the series after his father's death, will write in the same style, and if not, will I like it as much.
