It took me almost two months to finish this book. Anthony submerged deep into the feelings of the protagonists and things happening around them in THAT very particular moment. The alternative back and forth shift between Marie-Laure and Werner was edgy and pacey, requires constant reading of the book-which cannot be put on-hold for long. I don't really understand the hype for this book. There were certainly glimmers of great writing (view spoiler) but I was never completely engaged and by the last third, the part that the whole book was building to, it was really a slog.

Beautiful in so many ways, but still frustrated, to the end, with the spiraling chapters, jumping from character to character, time period back and forth. I certainly got caught up in the story and with the fascinating characters. I thought the ending was excellent, wrapping up all the stores and giving the reader hope. I certainly got the message that war has so many unintended consequences and that collateral damage isn't only on one side. Definitely worth reading but convoluted structure.
