Oooh! This was a good one.

I love a good murder mystery and this was fast-paced and easy to read. It is mostly narrated by Lucy, with the podcast episodes interspersed between short chapters that occasionally switch from the present to the past. I always enjoy a good amnesia trope, so I was captivated from the beginning; needless to say, this was right up my alley.

say huh? needless to say, the book grabbed my interest from the very first sentence. i have seen a lot of hype about it so part of me has put off wanting to read it because of that, since i frequently do not feel the same love for heavily hyped up books, but i decided to check it out finally and devoured it while i was home all weekend due to snowy weather. i have heard it was great as an audiobook since it has a podcast at the "A podcaster has decided to ruin my life, so I'm buying a chicken."

say huh? needless to say, the book grabbed my interest from the very first sentence. i have seen a lot of hype about it so part of me has put off wanting to read it because of that, since i frequently do not feel the same love for heavily hyped up books, but i decided to check it out finally and devoured it while i was home all weekend due to snowy weather. i have heard it was great as an audiobook since it has a podcast at the beginning of many of the chapters, but i do not think it really made a huge difference to read it instead of listen to it, though i did both at different points. it was very fast-paced whodunit murder mystery/ psychological thriller with a lot of twists and turns to throw you off as to who did actually murder one of the main characters. i was not shocked as to the reveal, though it was not completely obvious, but that may also be because i never thought the female main character/ narrator for a majority of the book was the murderer, even though she was accused of it since she was found covered in the victim's blood and could not remember what happened. so the majority of the book is about the podcast trying to prove who actually did it, even if it turned out to be the female main character. coming back to her hometown where it all took place helped finally bring back all of the repressed memories and piece together what really happened. despite the fact that she could not remember anything that happened that night and seemed to have a Dexter/ Joe Goldberg - like "inner voice" and visions of killing people quite frequently, including her love interests, i was drawn to her lively, i don't give a shit what you think really happened personality and i liked the chemistry between the main characters as they interacted to try to figure out the truth (regardless about how unethical it was). while the book's ending is a little ambiguous since a major focus of the story seems to be that sometimes the truth doesn't matter, i do believe it happened the way it is told, even though both of the main characters were not completely honest about a few things. i guess part of why the author chose the route they did as to who the actual murderer was is to throw off the readers and provide a clearer pathway for what would happen as the main female character moves forward with trying to recover from everything revealed since she did not seem totally set on just one person romantically throughout the book, though she did seem drawn to one of them more-so. i was glad that ended up being the way it would probably turn out because i liked that particular pairing if there was going to be any romance involved and hope that they get their HEA after all that had happened in this story. overall, it was a really good book and i am glad i finally read it. ...more

Really brilliant as an audiobook. This was the start of me wanting to listen to many more thrillers as audiobooks. I don't think the story would've been as impactful if I'd read it traditionally but this was just really enjoyable :)) ...more
