What Members Thought

When this book was named to the Booker longlist, I was disappointed that it wouldn't be published in the USA until 24 September, far beyond when the shortlist was announced. But then I got a review copy of the audiobook from Random House Audio, and moved it to first in line.

This is an ambitious book for Jhumpa Lahiri and I think it's the best thing she's done. She begins with two brothers born into post-British India and follows them through the different paths they take. Their choices influence each other and the other people in their lives. Lahiri's writing is deceptively simple, but she totally involved me in this tale.

I remember a lot of sadness sweeping throughout the story. From the slum where the two brothers live, the poverty where they come from, the exclusive club nearby their house.

Jhumpa Lahiri's short stories are amazing. Her first novel The Namesake was not one of my favorite books. I liked it but it lacked the power of her short stories.
The Lowlands, her second novel, provided me with a full length story that read with the power of her short stories. I simply loved it. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and I cared about them and what was happening in their lives, no matter if I liked them or not.
