I enjoyed every minute of this long and detailed saga about a farm family whose lives are cleverly intertwined by Ms. Smiley with the history of the U.S.spanning the years 1930 through approximately 2018 (though it was published in 2015). Ms. Smiley writes especially well about the lives and minds of children. Another big plus is that Ms. Smiley's prose has the calm classicism of Edith Wharton's and never annoys or intrudes on her story. The only puzzling and somewhat dismaying feature of these ...more

Looks at the life of the Langdon family on their Iowa farm--one chapter for each year 1920-1953. Births, deaths, raising children, changes in education, the great depression, WWII, marriages, changes in farming.

I love family sagas, especially long ones, and I especially liked the one chapter = one year organization of this one.
