Well, this book was disappointing. I have read several books set in the former Yugoslavia, all better than this book. (The Cellist of Sarajevo, The Tiger's Wife, People of the Book, etc.)

It was like the author couldn't decide what kind of book to write, so she combined seemingly disparate elements that really are disparate for a reason! The little red chairs set up in Sarajevo to commemorate the dead. A small town in Ireland with a gossip mill. Immigration and poverty. Single parenting. Abortion ...more

Listened to the incomparable Juliet Stevenson read this novel. I think I would listen to her read the contents of a dog food package. Not sure how much I enjoyed this tale of a woman who succumbs to a charismatic stranger, however. I think it took too long to get to the unveiling and then too little time spent on the healing.
