This book has the best beginning I have read in a while - “Lydia is dead. But they don’t know this yet. 1977, May 3, six thirty in the morning, no one knows anything but this innocuous fact: Lydia is late for breakfast.”
The book itself is this lovely, heartbreaking story about failed dreams and the hope that we have for our children to be better than ourselves. It is spectacular. Worth reading. You'll think about it long after you find out what lead to Lydia's death.

There was a movie called Upside Down, where the whole world was literally upside-down. In a way, this is the book form of it (without the love story).

Ng took the road not taken in drama genre and took a completely different twists and turns. It was unlike everything I read and she did it in an unexpected way. I was caught off guard.

Ng went deep into character portrayals. Nothing new in this department. It was the issue she raised that breathed new life into the genre.

I had an itch. It was right between my shoulder blades, and I couldn't reach it. I tried to get it with this book. The nostalgia, the complicated family relationships, the hint of mystery that unravels throughout the story. It usually hits my sweet spot. This book was close, but didn't quite get it. The language is beautiful. I had such clear images of events, the little town, and the beautiful people in this book. I think the missing piece of the puzzle was with one of the female characters.
