I am downgrading my review and adding this revision to my review because first, I have since read a few commentaries pointing out the problems with Vance’s memoir on the “broader sociology cultural context”; but also because Vance’s trajectory since this memoir makes clear to me that the memoir was fundamentally dishonest and bullshit, in putting an impression of someone reporting with compassion and curiosity on divisions in America. I didn't care much for this book. Most memoirs are self-indulgent to a certain extent, but this one I found painfully so. He knows that he was lucky to "escape" the hillbilly culture, although I'm not sure he really has. Furthermore, he doesn't seem to realize that the permanent underclass, including hillbillies, are useful tools of our society, and have always existed. Don't waste your time with this book. This is rare for me, but I didn't even finish this book. I found myself agreeing with much of his personal story - finding it illustrative - but his desire to extrapolate from it without acknowledging the privilege from which he now writes made me wary of trusting him. ...more
