I mostly liked this, but I had some mehhh moments. I disliked the way each adult's "back story" would basically overtake a chapter in far too much detail - the second half of the book dragged quite a lot to me, because of this. Mia was a touch too perfect, too calm and serene in the face of all of it, and the McCauleys were almost caricatures, with their ridiculous ignorance.

I loved Ng's first novel, "Everything I Never Told You", and I loved "Little Fires Everywhere" almost as much. The novel is a domestic drama set in the wealthy, planned community of Shaker Heights. Ng explores the lives of two families. One is "perfect" with a beautiful home and four all-star children and the other consists of a nomadic, somewhat mysterious artist and her 15 year old daughter. While I ultimately enjoyed this book, I found it a little light on substance--more of a young adult novel than serious literature. (The focus of the book is really on the experiences of a group of high school students, although it does go somewhat beyond them.) Also, I was troubled by what appears to be an anti-adoption message, especially cross-racial adoptions. Is Ng saying that white couples shouldn't be adopting Asian babies?
