What Members Thought

The Handmaid's Tale chronicles the former U.S. after it becomes the Republic of Gilead, a monotheocracy going back to the cultural guidelines of the Old Testament. A cautionary tale, even more so in this age. (ETA: And I said that in 2005, so much more disconcerting now.)

I couldnt put this down -- it was so engaging, but did i miss something or did it really not have an ending? and what was with that epilogue? I like books with tidy endings, but I know she's not really into that... btw, does she ever write anything lighthearted???

This book is surprisingly fantastic. I wouldn't think I'd want to read something that could be described as feminist post-apocalyptic science fiction but I did and I loved every second of it. Read it, it's good!

This was chilling because certain elements don't seem that far fetched when you take the extreme religious right into account.
