The Handmaid's Tale chronicles the former U.S. after it becomes the Republic of Gilead, a monotheocracy going back to the cultural guidelines of the Old Testament. A cautionary tale, even more so in this age. (ETA: And I said that in 2005, so much more disconcerting now.) ...more

The show hit the main points of the book. Here’s your cliff-notes of this timeless classic (published in 1985. Can you believe that was forty years ago this year?!?):

I couldnt put this down -- it was so engaging, but did i miss something or did it really not have an ending? and what was with that epilogue? I like books with tidy endings, but I know she's not really into that... btw, does she ever write anything lighthearted??? ...more
