What Members Thought

Short summary right at finishing: This was a wonderful book. I don't even care that it had baseball in it and that sometimes I needed to skim those parts. This novel about a family going through life, in the 1960s in Camas, Washington, and the characters are so vibrant and real I may never forget them. Highly, highly recommended.
I'm hoarding quotations after the spoiler cut, but I'm not prepared to fold them into a longer review quite yet.

Many of my friends whose reading tastes I respect love this book. I loved many things about it, particularly the development of the family characters over time and Duncan's sometimes transcendent use language. However, his love of language may have led to what I didn't like. His frequent digressions from the story and wordiness often made me want him to simply get on with it. However, those criticisms don't change the fact that I'm glad I read it.

There's something really amazing about this book. I'm not particularly interested in baseball, Seventh Day Adventists, the Vietnam War, Indian poets, fly fishing, or any of the other topics of this book, and yet, I love it. Duncan weaves all of this together into such a moving, sensitive portrait of a family that you laugh, cry, and celebrate just like you do with your own loved ones. So poignant and brilliantly written - a knockout.

3.5 really with a crap load of reservations, but there was lots to like about this novel so I'm bumping it up rather than down. Give me a week and I could change my mind.
