My husband groaned when I told him what I was reading. We've both been to Auschwitz and were devastated by it. I don't think I've ever been so close to calculated human cruelty in my life. But, this book is different than any other Holocaust writing I've read. The author is telling the story of a real woman who survived the Nazis in Poland while trying to find her husband (the King of Hearts) who has been captured and placed in concentration camps. This an easy read and not something that wrings you out. I was fascinated until I began to think all her exploits were just too pat, too lucky, too easily pulled off. Did Krall have any other source of information than Izolda? I somehow just don't believe it could have been as easy as this, and began to think Izolda was embroidering more than a bit.
