This novel had so much hype, between its listing as a pick for Book of the Month and a monthly pick for Reese Witherspoon's book club, that I almost didn't want to read it. But I was headed to a long weekend in Beaufort, SC, with a landscape similar to that of the book, and decided to listen to it on the way there. We got about 10% in listening at 1x speed. After returning home and finishing up some podcast listening, I returned to the book at 1.75x speed and finished it in a few days.

I clearly really, really liked this book; hence my four-star rating. There was a strongly developed sense of reality in both the setting and the characters. The characters possessed a solid reality and individuality. The narrative was circuitous despite essentially being set in one area, the coastal swamps of the Carolinas. 4.5 might be more accurate. A beautifully written story of Kya, a girl left alone to raise herself in the marshes of North Carolina.

I think most of the book is a great light read, especially the nature descriptions. I only give it a 3 because I think the end was implausible and slightly saccharine.
