Boy, can Mary Doria Russell tell a story. This one specifically about a woman both literally and figuratively tall in stature. Tired of seeing men die, lose limbs, lose housing after being unable to work the mines, Annie Klobuchar Clements organizes women, children and some men to strike against the mine owner for better pay, hours, and conditions.
This type of history always angers me, mostly because there are times that it seems that we haven't learned lessons.

I would rarely say that a book like this earns five stars, but that's what I think a book that moves me this much, that moves me beyond the way historical fiction usually moves me, deserves. This is an extraordinary example of historical fiction. Constant Reader, a Goodreads bookclub, will read it in January. The heroine is an actual person, a Union leader in Michigan. I wish I hadn't checked out the history before I finished the novel. I knew what was coming. And that was hard.

A very engrossing audiobook about the 1913 copper industry and ensuing tragedy in the Michigan Upper Peninsula. Highly recommended.

Had a hard time getting into this one, and I'm not sure why. The writing or the story was not bad. It just wasn't catching my interest for some reason. I would definitely read another book by this author. ...more
