I was inspired to read "Olive, Again" after listening to an interview with the author on the Guardian Books podcast. I liked Olive Kitteridge, and Olive, Again is on the Tournament of Books longlist so it didn't take a lot to convince me.

As an aging human, this made me sad. But it's a fine book. When I read Olive Kitteridge when that book came out I didn't like Olive much, but that was beside the point, or maybe it was the point but it didn't matter. The stories made me think and they were beautifully written. The stories in this volume are also beautifully written and thought-provoking, but somehow I'm a lot fonder of Olive than I used to be. She tells it like it is and she's earned the right to do that. Olive also hates Trump,

4.5 stars. Strout is such a master of the interconnected short story. As a fast reader, it's unusual for me to want to slow down and savor, but that is exactly what I wanted to do with these stories. I loved seeing Olive again. She is such a singular figure.

This is beautifully written and paced. Olive is the main, but one of many characters in this small town. She is difficult, flawed, judgmental, a snob in some ways, bluntly honest, has a bad temper..... and yet her honesty allows others to reveal their feelings and thoughts which is a comfort to them.
