What Members Thought

Half the time I didn't know who was telling the story since the narrator shifted each chapter, heck, half the time I didn't know what decade I was in. But I didn't mind. That was part of the journey. I loved the related characters moving in and out of the lives of two messy people, and how the styles shifted along with the characters. I journeyed from somewhat typical narrative to a David Foster Wallace-esque chapter from an imprisoned journalist, to a middleschooler telling a story through a sl

Aaaah! i can't review this right now. It might end up with two stars, it might end up with four. Need to give it some distance.
OK. here is the review. warning - it's one of those subjective/personal ones.

Bristling with wit, a joy to read, well deserving of awards. One of the best novels I've read this year.

This wasn't quite what I was expecting, but it was a wonderful read nonetheless (with one jarring note, see below). I had added this to my to reads some years back after reading a couple of glowing reviews, but I didn't remember at all that it's basically a connected series of stories, rather than a conventional novel. So I got way too invested in Sasha and Benny, thinking the story was entirely about them, and then there were all these other people showing up to tell their stories. But I adjust

I really enjoyed this book, which I picked up after seeing it on the NY Times' 100 notable books of 2010 and after it was recommended by commenters on jezebel.com. I was concerned because, while I liked Egan's book "The Keep," I didn't think it was as marvelous as everyone said.
"A Visit from the Goon Squad" is short stories that connect people associated with the music industry to one another. It is a journey that takes the reader to Naples, Italy and Africa, to the Arizona desert and the cold ...more

Deeply, deeply unpredictable novel that manages to write about musicians and love of music without resorting to hoary cliche. This novel is everything that Franzen's Freedom could have been had it been edited down a little better...but Egan would still win as her writing rarely, if ever, draws attention to itself, despite the use of various structures and forms (including a powerpoint presentation!)

One of the most innovative books I've ever read. A little gritty, so not for the faint of heart, but I grew to love the characters.

Shouldn't have listened to this one- it was way to confusing as an audio book. Might try to reread it down the road.
