What Members Thought

Jenny (Reading Envy)
1st read (2009): A lovely book of nesting stories, lightly connected to each other in various ways. My favorite was Letters from Zedelghem, because I love how Mitchell writes about music. I haven't found out how he can be so cheeky and reverent about people and life at the same time, but he manages, and it makes me feel so connected to his characters and stories.

2nd read (2012): As usual, I had forgotten quite a bit of this book. This time around, I instigated this as a "renegade read" for the

Torn between 3.5 and 4 stars. I liked it a lot, but I wasn't crazy about it. After I realized what was going on in terms of structure, I kept asking myself why he did this. What advantage did he gain? What keeps it from being just a gimmick? ...more

I'm sure others would disagree, but the thread and underlying theme wasn't satisfying to bring it all together. All that being said, the stories were great and the writing is superb. I'm looking fo ...more

Some day I might actually be able to write a review of this. But I'll have to re-read it first. For now, though: holy shit. I did not know what I was getting into at all with this one. And it's not an easy one, but so so so worthy it. Wow. The structure is what I am most marvelling at, but the layers of stories and connections and just wow. Brilliant. ...more

I loved the structure of this novel, but some of these narrators were so much less likable than others. I felt huge satisfaction of part of this, and some of it I just felt glad to be done.
