This is the best of the Erdrich books I have read. She successfully captures the mind and actions of a 13 year old boy on an Indian Reservation who is struggling with the vicious rape and attack on his beloved mother. The suspense of finding and punishing the guilty man keeps up through most of the book, although towards the end the momentum slackens. The ending seems fitting, but a bit tacked on. Recommended.
