An interesting portrayal of college-aged students in the period between the two world wars, trying to find their way in an England that has a lot of apathy and little connection. There is some commentary on sexuality that seems before its time as well.
I've heard Waugh's other books have some humor, and I'd try one.

After 27 years, I decided it was time to revisit Brideshead and read it again. I'm glad that I did. If you've ever visited an old home like Brideshead you know it has lots of flaws...it's cold in the winter, hot in the summer, the roof leaks, the plaster crumbles, the masonry is cracked...but the elegance and beauty of the place help you to overlook the flaws. An outstanding book about the Flytes and their friends, this book was very moving. One becomes impatient with many of the characters, but one is nevertheless swept along in the irresisitable swell of destruction that overtakes them. Parts are laugh-out-loud comical, as expected from Waugh, but overall this is a deeply pathetic book. Good to read and re-read. A heartbreaking book about dashed romance, class, religion. It's just great all around. And it was read by Jeremy Irons, so that was fantastic.
