While I was reading this book (well not exactly while but within the same time frame) I was also getting caught up on past episodes of The United States of Tara and Glee, both of which feature gay teens in supportive families. All of these things (shows and book that is) at the same time kind of made me forget that parents (not to mention the greater community/world) are not always supportive when their children are gay.

This book is a strange combination of whimsical unreality and authentic teen angst. Where in reality is the town where "P-FLAG is as big a draw as the PTA," where cheerleaders ride Harleys, and where the homecoming queen is also a star quarterback? In this town, those who are bigoted against glbt folk are in the minority. This is a town I'd love to step into, a place I wish every teenager could be while growing up.

This is Paul's story. Paul is an openly-gay student with understanding parents and an older brother. He knew for sure he was gay after finding his report card on his kindergarten teacher's desk and it said "definitely gay" on it. Paul's best friend is Joni and she is also the first person outside his family he came out to, back in the second grade. Then there's his friendship with Tony...these two do hang out together and do one another's homework (even if they go to different schools) and they'

i went into this book knowing it was going to be a little unrealistic, and expecting to find myself enjoying the whimsy while wishing for more relatability (for lack of a better word). instead, less than ten pages into the book i paused and actually said aloud, "oh, okay, this is just Weetzie Bat with a gay boy protagonist!" and it pretty much is. it is whimsical, definitely, and at no point during the telling did i ever imagine a school or a town like this existed-- except, perhaps, in the idea

This was a quick read and I really enjoyed spending some time in a town where the football quarterback could also be a drag queen and no one batted an eyelash. Very teenage angsty, but it's about high school sophomores, what else would you expect?
I think the best part of this book is the simplicity (and complexity) of a world where a full town of people have chosen to completely reject the idea of homophobia. It was awesome and thought provoking, while still being an easy, enjoyable read. ...more

Boy meets boy is simple and dull. The book carries a good message but I feel it was overly simplistic. The world the writer has created is idealistic and fanciful, I thought it was a bad move by the writer because the issue of prejudice and homophobia are so real. I couldn't identify with this foreign land. Everything falls into place so easily in this text. Everything was wrapped up so neatly and sweetly in the end I felt as though I was going to be sick. It's a good piece of light reading but
