I really loved this book; it had me hooked right from the beginning, and now is one of my favourite books. Thanks to this book I only got 45 minutes of sleep before having to go into work this morning, but it was worth it as I don’t think I could have managed to get through the day without trying to sneak time in for the finale of the story. I was so disappointed when the story came to an end and I had no more pages to read. :0( I’ll just have to pick up another Neil Gaiman book :0)

This story is about Richard Mayhew a run of the mill ordinary guy, living in London. He had a good job, a beautiful girlfriend and a wonderful disposition. One day on the way to meet his fiancé’s boss for dinner they stumble across the body of a girl lying hurt on the pavement. Jessica, Richards’s girlfriend would rather walk on as she thinks the girl is a homeless person and dealing with her will make them late for dinner with the boss. Richard can’t just leave her lying there though, he picks her up and starts’ heading towards his home after the girl begs him not to take her to a hospital.

That was the turning point in Richards life, after that moment everything changes.

Jessica calls off the engagement, people start ignoring him as if they can’t see him and his life is spiralling out of control in all the wrong ways. However the people from the London down below can still see Richard and their world is very different than the one Richard is used to. It is filled with sewers, dark tunnels and old historical ruins from London’s past. Not to mention some very dangerous people.

Door, the girl Richard saved is running for her life. There are two very evil and sadistic men after her who would like nothing better than to torture her to death, and she is on a mission to get answers for a crime committed against her family. Unfortunately she seems to have accidentally dragged Richard along into her mess and now the two have to work together and stay alive long enough to get answers for Door and to find a way to get Richard home again.

This is an excellent book. :0)

I read this novel just after I finished Stardust. At first, I think this novel will be more realistic than stardust. I thought the story in this novel will evolve more realistically (since the story took place in underground area of London; Tube stations, tunnels, sewers, etc) than Stardust. Oh well, I was wrong. Surprisingly, Neil Gaiman can create a fantasy world which is even greater than the fairie of Stardust. It's not hard to imagine and write about unicorn, elf, witch, etc if the story h ...more

I didn't get caught up in this story with the "must find out the ending now" feeling until well over half way through. And even then, there were events that I just didn't enjoy reading. I think it's a book I would enjoy more a second time through, since I really did like the ending, but I will probably never read it again.

Although I actually didn't "read" it, I listened to this on audio narrated by Neil Gaiman himself. And I have to say, he did a FANTASTIC job of narrating it! I loved his voices ...more

I almost want to liken this book to a series "Hitch hikers guide to the galaxy." It was a little bizarre, with an adventure in "London below," a world where fog kills and rats are royalty, but pretty enjoyable. ...more

I chose this novel as my introduction to Neil Gaiman and I'm so glad I did. I was absolutely HOOKED within the first few pages. Frightening and humorous at the same time, I could not put this book down and was so upset when it ended. I loved the villains - so creepy!! - and all the hidden twists in the plot, the puns, the wit...
