I haven't devoured a book this quickly in a while, school played a bit of a factor in that though.

It is disgusting to know that the subject matter of this book really goes on in the world, that there are young girls, children who are being sold like they are objects. Not only are they bought like a piece a meat they are sold to go into the sex industry. My stomach turned over so many times while reading this book, I was angry, sad and tried to feel hope for these girls.

This book addresses an important topic--sex trafficking and the trade in girls. But the actual book is pretty questionable. The author made an effort to write the book from the first-person perspective of a thirteen-year-old girl from a small Nepalese village who is sold to traders. She's told that she'll be brought to a city to be a domestic servant, but is instead brought to a brothel. This book took no time at all to read. It's written in short little free verse passages and the story is totally engrossing. Lakshmi is a 13 year old girl from Nepal who is poor but happy with her family. After their village is devastated by a monsoon, her stepfather sends her off to be a maid so she can raise money for her family. Thinking she will be able to help her family get a tin roof as well as clothes and food for her mother and baby brother, Lakshmi accepts her fate. When she eventually ...more

The epilogue talks about all the awesome activist work survivors of sexual slavery in Calcutta are doing to fight it. So why does the narrative consist of the horrible exploitation this woman experienced, followed by salvation by white people?

"Sold", is a book about a girl that was sold into the sex slave business in India. It tells the sad truth about what young girls have to go through in order for their families to receive around three hundred dollars. I cannot say that I enjoyed this book, it is a hard read in so the subject matter is not light hearted. I hope that one day we could stop all young women and girls from having to endure such a life. ...more
