Goodman has brought alive the 19th century world through his descriptions of how it would have looked like, how it would have smelt, and also the feelings our 2 heroines would have felt as seeing / smelling such sights. It is wonderful to have some perspectives as to what these 2 amazing women would have seen and lived through. A fascinating story of two strong, professional, 19th Century women attempting to circumnavigate the world in tribute to Jules Verne's "Around the World in 80 Days". The victor, Bly, found her career as New York's leading undercover journalist ruined, and became a somewhat bitter figure in later life, while Bisland, who hadn't really wanted to be involved to start with lived a happy and fulfilling life. My bookclub selected this book, which I hadn't otherwise heard about. I enjoyed the story of the race, particularly in the details the author added to put these women in the context of their time. Still, during the actual description of the travels, I wondered whether I should just read the primary source instead of the selected quotations.
