Not the best of Reacher's books. I thought the "villains" were not in his league at all and the action wasn't as exciting. He kicked their asses right and left and it was amazing how much he got by with. I never got the explanation of why the whole town was into the craziness. Nothing was a big surprise to me.

The best part of the book was getting an inkling of the reasons why Reacher left a job he was so good at. There had been some allusions in past books but I think this was the strongest: Rea

This one is not quite as good as some of the other Reacher books; perhaps not quite as exciting & fun, although the ending is quite an extravaganza. It is amusing to be bouncing between Hope & Despair, & even Halfway there. There is certainly a lot to despair of in Despair, what a place to live, anyone with any sense would be out of there as soon as they could, except there's no accounting for folks, & End-Time people even more so.

The idea of this book was interesting to me. Reacher stumbles upon a town called Hope and then wonders to the next town called Despair. Despair is a very interesting place. One man, Thurman, owns everything in town and employs all the people to work in this huge recycling facility. Reacher, of course, is immediately intrigued. Because he is too nosy and won’t listen to authority, he is charged with “vagrancy” and thrown in jail. He is taken back to Hope the next day. He befriends the sheriff of ...more
