I bought this on sale, not knowing it was the second in a series. I was tempted to buy the first book to start from there but I'm very glad I didn't. I had so many issues with this book I'm not even sure where to start.
First off, I guess, was the character of Kate herself. I don't really have a problem with flawed characters but this woman was a mess. Flipping out on suspects, allowing her 'boyfriend' to continue to help even though it could have ruined her case, putting herself and other off ...more

The second book in the Kate Burkholder series by Linda Castillo, Pray for Silence opens with one of Painter’s Mills' deputies discovering multiple deaths at an Amish farm. Seven people are dead – the father (with a gun in his hand) and his 2 sons in the house, the mother clutching an infant dead in the yard and the 2 teenage daughters tortured and killed in the barn. At first, the scene looks like a case of murder-suicide – but is it? As Chief of Police Kate Burkholder and her team work the scen

The Amish community is quiet, serene and trusting of whomever they meet. The families who love here do not even lock their doors at night. One of these nights, an intruder abused this trust.

The Amish are able to have jobs in their hometown even if the business is owned by the English people,i.e., they are ...more

The investigation soon centers on 15 year old daughter Mary who had a secret relationship with an unknown English man. The Planks were Amish. I didn't find this book as engaging as the first in the series. The murders are described in grisly detail at the beginning of the book. Then the investigation bogs down for quite awhile. Kate doesn't do com

Not quite as good as her first..just didn't tie up everything at the end..left me with questions and that is irritating..not for those with queasy stomachs..and I mean that.

This second book kept me interested definitely, and I read the book very quickly. However, I didn't find it 'got' me as well as the first one did. I wasn't as surprised this time, nor did I find it as tense. Still, I don't see how she could have done a better job without it feeling too much like a repeat of the first book. This one was different enough that it didn't. Overall an enjoyable thriller.
