4 stars for entertainment. This is a story told in two halves, which eventually join. Sookie’s world- and oh, what a world! Daughters whose names are Le-Le and Dee-dee etc, a narcissistic mother who must be obeyed, a loving husband who is a dentist, and the ability to faint apparently at will when a shock is experienced. 5*s for purely sentimental reasons. The book itself was certainly a fun piece of entertainment. What elevated it for me was the personal connections. My heritage is Polish on my Grandfather's side so all the names, foods and polkas brought me back to childhood. Plus my Grandmother was a WAVE during WWII so I've always known about the service women performed during the war. But the story of the WASPs wasn't one I knew until quite recently. I am sort of in two minds about his book. I enjoyed both sections i.e. Sookie and the Judabrilanskis. However there were times when i wanted to tell Sookie to man up and get on with living. I think she got there in the end but it sure took a long time. I almost feel that this book is about expectations and how you deal with them. Maybe the expectations on Sookie were greater than those on Fritzi and her family
