I don't get the "remarkability" of this book. It is fragmented, difficult to follow, jumps around from different pasts to various presents. The plot is completely lost in all this meandering. Initially the reader is drawn into a story of a poor man doing his best to raise his daughter after her mother dies in childbirth but this plot line is then abandoned to bring in characters who have no real value to the story.

3 1/2 stars. A beautifully written story entwining the present and past of a group of people living in a small village in Haiti. At times however, the switch in characters and tune felt a little confusing and disjointed.
