Wow, I absolutely love this book! It went way over my expectations. Unlike most of my friends who had to read this for their English class, I didn't. I arrived in Australia missing the year (grade) this book is set for and it has taken me this long (over 16 years) to get to it.
This is a coming-of-age novel. Josephine Alibrandi is 17 going on 18 but she has never been sure of who she is and where she fits in. Josie was born in Australia and is of Italian decent. Due to the circumstance of her bir ...more

It's impossible to read this without comparing it with others of Marchetta's books. I enjoyed it, but not quite as much as the others I've read. It is of course more like On the Jellicoe Road than the fantasy Finnikin of the Rock. As in both of them, Marchetta's writing style is straightforward and clear, moving the plot forward and including a good amount of dialogue.

She is a scholarship student at her private Catholic school, St. Martha’s, in Sydney.

Not my best Marchetta book. Way too...young-adult, I'ld say- Although the words the characters said sometimes seemed to come from a thirty-something year-old rather than a boy-obsessed teenager. There wasn't any one moment of falling in love with the characters like I had with her other books. A lot of yelling and weird, sometimes funny situations. So overall, I'ld say 3 but just because it's Marchetta!
