This is one of the most engaging stories/narrators I have read in awhile. I tried hard to think of something I didn;t like, just for some balance (not because I am such a negative person), and I still have yet to come up with something. There's a great magical realism/tall-tale feel to it, which is refreshing in a ya book.

Savvy is the story of Mibs (Mississippi) Beaumont and her rather unusual family. At 13, every member of the Beaumont family discovers they have a "savvy," a special power of so

The Beaumont family members all have "savvy", a special-to-each-person extraordinary ability that exhibits at age 13; Mibs is just coming of age as this story begins. She has been looking forward to her 13th birthday and learning just what her "savvy" will be, but two days before her birthday her father is in a serious car accident and is in a coma in the hospital. Her mother wants to be there with him, and Mibs and two of her brothers are left in the care of the preacher's wife. On her birthda ...more

When I read the summary of Savvy, I worried it might be too much like Graceling. I loved Graceling, but I wanted Savvy to be its own book. It is.

It did, however, remind me a bit of The Anybodies books, although I can't pinpoint exactly why. But it's a good thing. Savvy is also what I wanted Horns and Wrinkles to be.

I especially enjoyed this knowing that it is Ingrid Law's first book. I look forward to reading anything else she writes in the future.

Two things I particularly loved about this book

Everyone in the Beaumont family develops a "savvy" when they turn 13, and the first-person protagonist here is Mibs, who is about to have her 13th birthday as the book starts.

The story covers a mild adventure that ensues, including Mibs and her brothers and several friends she makes along the way. It's a sweet, heartwarming story that touches on the importance of accepting yourself, as well as the inaccuracies of our assumptions about what other people are thinking and feeling. And, because Mibs

My 5th grade class LOVES this read aloud, and I LOVE reading it. The language is easily usable to teach all sorts of linguistic elements. I can't imagine a better example of "adding exciting adjectives" to make your writing lively. The premise is very original and the characters are well developed as well. ...more

This was a fun book written for a juvenile audience (it is a Newbery Honor book). There were a lot of interesting characters and fun magic. Ingrid Law is a fun story teller that brings the Beaumont family and their friends to life with charm. I am looking forward to reading the sequel.

What a wonderful book! I am so glad that I listened to it. Let me imagine the scene a little better I think. I loved the families' savvy's. Makes me wish I knew of a savvy I had. ...more
