I absolutely loved this. It might not be everyone's cup of tea (pun intended!), but I simply loved it. It reminded me a lot of an Agatha Christie, only without the mystery aspect.

The characters are real. They must be! I can see them clearly and I feel like I know them. Of course I especially loved Major Pettigrew and Mrs. Ali. I'm grateful for the time I got to spend in their world. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a quiet British love story with underlying themes of family, race,

1.5 really. I couldn't finish it, but I felt like I should like it better than I did. Normally, I only give 1 star to abandoned reads, but... there was something worthwhile in there, I think. Just not for me. ...more

Major Pettigrew is a widow living in the village of Edgecomb St. Mary. After his brother dies he strikes up a friendship with the local, widowed Pakistani shopkeeper, Mrs. Ali. A really enjoyed the relationship between the Major and Mrs. Ali. This is a charming book with a good moral about class and racism.

I read this book slowly so as to enjoy every page and enjoy it I did! The story feels fresh, and the main characters are especially well drawn; they are as admirable as they are entertaining. I liked the Major's philosophical way of thnking and his dry sense of humor. ...more

A wonderful love story! What endearing characters peopled this book - especially Major Pettigrew! I was rooting for him the whole time and was on the edge of my chair hoping and wishing he would find his way through his old British propriety to happiness.
