My rating is more like a 3.76

I am not a huge science fiction fan and have not seen the film. However this book quickly caught my interest. It was a bit disconcerting how well the author predicted some aspects of modern life. The first two thirds of the book race by like a thriller that you do not want to put down. I thought the most intriguing part was about the psychology of the artificial intelligence that turns on the crew. I was gripped with fear during that part. The book basically contains 3 stories that are linked together. It starts with the ape-men on earth which I have a feeling makes more sense in the book than the movie since you get some idea what the ape-men are thinking. Then it leaps forward to a scientist travelling to the moon to investigate a strange structure. I thought the discussion of moon living was interesting. Then it moves two more years into the future where five scientists, three are in hibernation, are travelling to Saturn. HAL w

This was a story that I'd heard bits and pieces about, mainly on HAL, but reading the book was completely different from what I expected. Sometimes that wrecks the story for me, if I go into it with strong expectations, but not in this case. I really enjoyed the read.
