A Chinese proverb says that falling leaves return to their roots. In this memoir, Adeline Yen Mah, discusses her childhood and growing up in China. When she became an adult, she moved to America and worked as a doctor but she always felt a pull towards her family and her hometown of Shanghai, despite a tense relationship with certain members of her family and political changes of her mother country. This is the personal story of Adeline Yen Mah, an unwanted Chinese daughter.
I am not sure of the rating of this book. I am between 3 and 4 stars. I have a feeling that it would be a better book, it would be an excellent book, if the story was not written with such bitterness from the part of the writer. I found this a very moving book. It was well written and I felt very connected to Adeline, and it was amazing what she accomplished after her childhood. This story moves past cultural boundaries, with it's themes of loneliness and family. It made me appreciate my own family more. ...more
