This is the story of Sophie, a young woman who's transformed into an old lady by an evil witch into. Not knowing what to do, Sophie leaves her home and bullies Howl - a supposed evil warlock - to let her live in his moving castle while she tries to find a way to regain her youth back.

I found the whole book confusing. I didn't understand why she would behave like a 90-year old - just because she looked like an old woman didn't mean that she was. Why was she afraid of Howl when she first met him?

I only know a handful of people who've ever heard of this novel, or even of its author, which is such a shame because I think of it as being one of the greatest Fantasy novels ever published. Its author was instructed by C.S.Lewis & Tolkien and much of their instruction shines through, but the creativity of Ms. Jones is unique to her own style.

This is one of the best novels I have ever read. It was so magical and delightful to read. The settings feel real and the characters were all so richly

Howl's Moving Castle is a sweet and humorous book about a girl who has a spell placed on her by an evil witch. The spell changed the eighteen year old girl into a ninety year old lady. The bespelled girl finds herself finding shelter in the Wizard Howl's magical moving castle. She ends up convincing him to let her stay as a cleaning lady while she tries to find the secret that will break her curse. I really enjoyed this fun book. It was a quick read and the characters were a lot of fun. Although ...more

A thoroughly enjoyable light fantasy romp. I can't believe I never read this when I was a child. I would have adored this book when I was ten or eleven. Highly recommended for young fantasy readers and for those young at heart who like fairy tale type stories. The book pokes gentle fun at some fairy tale tropes (e.g., the eldest child seeking her fortune; the Witch of the Waste) and has clever elements woven into the story. There's a bit of magic, a touch of romance, a bit of a coming of age sto ...more

This was quite an interesting romp. I loved the quirky characters, but it was not until midway through. I did find that the story dragged a bit in the middle, but took off towards the end. I loved that Sophie got so much more spunk when she was turned into an old crone. Overall I agree with others who have compared it to Stardust, but I loved Stardust and and liked it more than this one. I can see this books appeal to fantasy lovers, but I am not in love with it. ...more

The fantasy and humor are impressive.
The novel in the beginning was okay but as the pages went, I was becoming sick with the plot--- it was too slow at the beginning but had been totally rushed at the end. I got a little worried on how could the book finish in a few pages. Leaving some questions hanging about the characters fate, Had Martha fulfilled her dreams to have 10 kids or what... was Fanny really had somehow exploited Sophie...

I'd personally want to know more on how Sophie and Howl get
