It's not often I find a book that makes me laugh out loud, but this one did so many times over the course of my reading it that I lost count. I've got a weakness for what I'll call "alternate history" novels, and this is one of the best versions of our world I've run into-- and, as someone who often wished she could hop into the pages of her favorite books and have a chat with the characters, one I'm quite envious of. Fforde's style is funny without being ostentatious, and the book weaves myster ...more

This is my first Jasper Fforde book, but it won't be my last. I found the book clever and amusing and quite enjoyed the literary twists in the background. I'll be excited to read more about Thursday Next's adventures in the rest of the series and I'll probably also give the Nursery Crimes series a shot. This book managed an interesting concept of time travel (and travel into books) without getting overly hung up on the logic and means. I'll be interested to see if the concept can be developed ov ...more

This book is a strange combination of in-jokes, weird juxtapositions, strange names and science fiction. It was a quick read, but somehow it just missed the mark for me. Sure, there were many moments when I marvelled at Fford's creative genius, but at the end it didn't hang together enough.
Loved the Dodos (plock plock), the bookworms that eat prepositions (and fart out apostrophes and ampersands) and the random names, though kept wondering when he would give in to what must have been a strong c

This was pretty cool. Fforde is definitely clever and extrememly creative. The book is set in an alternate London around 1985 where people time travel and jump in and out of books. Jane Eyre gets kidnapped out of the original manuscript and all copies of the book are changed. The main character, Thursday Next, has to try and get Jane back and set things back to normal.

I really loved this book - the breadth of it is amazing and I've chuckled a few times which is evidence of a good read. I can't wait to read the rest of the series and I'm just wondering why it took me a few years to discover these novels. ...more

Such a fun read. Will check out the rest of the series. Interesting to see a woman as the lead for a change. Reminiscient of Adam's "Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul" at times. Never read Jane Eyre, but I reckon it didn't matter that much. ...more

This was such a fun book and started me on my semi-fantasy kick. The concept is that a woman "reads herself" into Jane Erye and changes the ending. Jasper Fforde is so creative and the alternative universe he creates is pretty cool. ...more

The story of Thrusday Next a SpecOps agent specializing in literary crimes. I found the book amusing in spots but it took awhile to get going and the book jacket gave away too much of the plot.
