When you first meet Flora Poste, you wonder whether she is going to be a bit of a busybody. After her parents die, she decides the best way to live is to move in with relatives - any relatives, she isn't bothered. When her distant relatives from Cold Comfort Farm in Sussex offer to take her in, she takes herself down there not just to live, but to tidy them all up. Oh! My! This was fun and difficult at the same time. If I hadn't already seen the movie, I think I would have given up, long before Flora did. Actually, she accomplished some positive things at Cold Comfort Farm against impossible odds, especially dealing with Aunt Ada, who 'saw something nasty in the woodshed' (I did SO want to know what she saw!), and most of the cast had their happily-ever-after, especially Flora & Charles. ...more

This is such a unique book, as it's a satire, but in many ways it seems to be a satire on classic novels - meaning that it was written in present time to poke at classic novels. I must have flipped back to the copyright page 5 times to verify that it was in fact published in 1932.

It's been described as the funniest book of all time, and while I'm not sure I'd go that far, it was definitely a fun read.

What I loved about this was that even though the ridiculous tendencies of the characters were parodies, it was done with such sympathy that you couldn't help liking all of them. ...more
