I'm not mad enough at this book to give it a lower rating, and it had some initially promising elements (POC as main character, women characters not described in pornographic detail, etc.), but I am finding its popularity nearly as inexplicable as The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I felt reluctant to only give this three stars. Aaronovitch's London is compelling, and I found myself completely sucked in to this mixture of the mundane and magical. A reviewer stated Rivers of London was Harry Potter grown up and joined the Fuzz - I wouldn't agree with that, but both Rowling and Aaronovitch have managed to create worlds that seamlessly bring together the recognisable and the extraordinary. This started off with such promise, but by the end I found myself debating between 2 and 3 stars, because it feels most like 2.5. I like the protagonist, and I like the premise. And the level of humor is just perfect for me - things you can't help laughing at, but never feeling like the author was reaching for something funny that wasn't really there.
