Ah, such a sad sad story of life happening the way we didn't expect it to. This book convinced me that Tana French is one of those awesome authors I should add on my favorites list. More thoughts soon. ...more

Shelves: crime, thriller
There were a lot of similarities between this book and the first in the series - In the Woods. The narrator was successful, and then he faces this one case which changes everything. The narrator and his partner have a great relationship and work really well together and then it all goes wrong. And the narrator's past looms large, as a sub plot running parallel to the actual crime. But despite these similarities, or maybe because of them, I really enjoyed this book. This is my least favorite of French's books so far, but it was still very, very good. The ending was bleak, both in the unraveling of the mystery and in its effects on Scorcher's life, and I was really quite bummed out by it. But her writing is incredible, her window into the human heart and mind is brutally clear, and her stories never fail to wring empathy from me. ...more

Detective Kennedy is put in charge of the murder of a father and two children, the wife has been seriously injured, with his rookie partner Richie Curran. The Spain family lived in a half completed development in Broken Harbor and there are mysterious holes in the walls of their house. "Scorcher" is introduced in the third book of the series but this book is all his. I like that the book focuses on a different cop. It makes the book almost a stand-alone yet has a continuous thread for a series. Well-written. Great story with psychological twists and turns I did not foresee. Wonderful read!
