Ah, such a sad sad story of life happening the way we didn't expect it to. This book convinced me that Tana French is one of those awesome authors I should add on my favorites list. More thoughts soon.

I didn't enjoy this book as much as the previous three in the series, but it's still a good mystery. One thing that bothered me was that the victims were so unlikable, and the plot surrounding them was so convoluted. Instead of the "Omigosh, yes! Why didn't I figure that out?" I sometimes feel at the end of a well-constructed mystery, my reaction was almost "So who cares?" Also, protagonist Scorcher Kennedy seems to be -- well, "self-destructing" is too strong a word to use, but not by much. The

"Scorcher" is introduced in the third book of the series but this book is all his. I like that the book focuses on a different cop. It makes the book almost a stand-alone yet has a continuous thread for a series. Well-written. Great story with psychological twists and turns I did not foresee. Wonderful read! Highly recommended.
