I am really glad to have gotten to read this book. The book is painful. Bad things happen throughout. These things are told straightforwardly and not sugar-coated. There's no ultimate redemption here. Moments of hope imperiled by layer upon layer of drudgery, violence, fear, and unfairness.
This wasn't magical realism. Fantastical maybe, but not magical.

As a work of fiction this is probably a little too close to the truth to be described as enjoyable reading. Nevertheless, this tale of slavery and of one woman's quest for a life of freedom is an excellent read. The conditions in which slaves were expected to work and live, including their existence as chattels of the plantation owner, are described graphically. At one point in this book I found myself dreaming about it, and that is rare.

Sometimes the narrative felt like a dry history book and it was indeed disturbing and violent. The author definitely puts his point across though and for this I give 4 stars.

Fascinating, creative, one of my favorite books of the year!
