I liked this book a lot. The author did a great job bringing the variety of characters to life. As I read the book, the details made it easy to image the terror the refugees felt as they were fleeing violence all around them. Sepetys tells a story that shows how everyday people from both sides of the conflict are caught up in the middle of the violence. It sheds light on an aspect of the war that often gets lost among the other horrible atrocities that occurred during World War II.
Reading a book about war is never easy or pleasant. Really, though, what better way to learn history than through stories. This one is very well done. 4.5 stars.
Recommended by my daughter... she told me this book was by far one of her favorites and i can see why!
The stories of the three wary travelers and the people they were with was mesmerizing. I loved each of their voices and loved how their personalities showed through the writing. Alfred was another story... Sepetys does a great job with his voice though!

I actually have no problem with this book, I just wasn't up for people dying and the horrors of war. Perhaps I'll revisit it down the road.
