After the first few chapters, I really began to enjoy the straightforward style of (Mary)Jack's first-person narrative. She uses what is presumably London street slang of the time, and displays a disarming acceptance of the way things are, whether on the London streets or disguised as a boy and working on the Royal Navy ship "The Dolphin". In both places, she's considered expendable, whether as an orphan or a ship's boy, but she manages to make the best of the situations she finds herself in. If ...more

I don't know if I would have ever read this book if I didn't pick it up as an audio book to listen to while at the gym. Wow! This book was a great and pleasant surprise. I cannot wait to pick up the next in the series.

Mary "Jacky" Faber is orphaned and joins a young group of street orphans to beg and steal to survive. When Charlie, the leader of their gang, dies under suspicious circumstances, Mary changes her identity and heads down the river to realize her destiny. A series of fun seafaring ad

I wasn't looking for another series to read! But this one pulled me right in and wouldn't let go until the end. Mary "Jacky" Faber is such a survivor! I thoroughly enjoyed this great seafaring adventure, and would give it 4.5 stars if I could. I will definitely be reading more in this series.

Note: This is for OLDER YA.

I can see why this series is so popular. It has non-stop action and a spunky heroine that finds adventure and love, not to mention pirates, on the high seas.
I loved getting to know Jacky and her fellow cabin boys! It was light and fun and made for a wonderful summer book!

I'm glad I listened to the audiobook. I think reading the Cockney accent would have driven me nuts. It's a fun story. ...more
