After recently reaing another James Patterson novel (Don't Blink) I have read this with some disappointment. Frankly, I expected more body...more meat to the story...even for a young adult novel it could have been better.

This book is the first book in a new young adult series by James Patterson and one of his stable of co-writers. It is set in a dystopian world, where a dictator has taken over and is systematically trying to remove anyone he feels threatened by. Of course, his main nemeses are two young adults, a brother and sister who just happened to be (you guessed it) a witch and a wizard.

First of all it should be noted that although Patterson is the main writer on this book, it is not one of his usual thrillers. This book is aimed at the teenage/young adult group and that is reflected in the writing, the language and the flow and complexity of the story. One of my students critiqued this book by saying.. it started too fast and ended too fast.. to me it is sort of the cliff notes of Harry Potter. It has some very cool elements and strong writing but it could have been much deeper and longer. It will be interesting to see how this series develops. It does seem especially appealing to recommend to students who are daunted by "big" books. It is a perfect book to read on an airplane trip.

I am a fan of James Patterson's Alex Cross series, which are not young adult books. So, when my brother gave me #3 in this series, I decided to read from the start.
What fun this book was! I was definitely involved with the story and characters. Imagine my surprise, though, to reach the end and find that there were appendages, which gave a tongue-in-cheek nod to adult readers! I loved it! ...more

What happens when two teenagers are kidnapped in the middle of the night from their home, thrown into prison and convicted of being a witch and a wizard? This is the first book in a new James Patterson YA series. It is a quick read and enjoyable.
