I enjoyed this more than I had the first book of Seth's I read, A Suitable Boy, but I still wouldn't say I loved it. The protagonist, Michael, is a member of a string quartet, and the constant presence of music in his life and therefore in the story made it interesting. The plot revolves around Michael's feelings for Julia, another musician, and how the two of them deal with those feelings and the complications of the rest of their lives. The musical atmosphere that threaded through this book made it quite unusual to read, although I did find I could engage with the book much better without outside distractions as it did require some concentration. The characters were realistic and likeable, but ultimately let down by their own flaws. An enjoyable book.
