What Members Thought

First I want to set the record straight. This book is not in the same echelon as The Help. It’s an enjoyable read and it does have a similar theme. However, The Help is in a league all it’s own. This book reminds me of a Fanny Flagg novel. Southern setting, conflict is mild, humor is widespread and it’s a nice, copasetic story. I enjoyed it. I just thought there would be more to it. The story is about Cee Cee. She is rescued from an unhappy situation in Ohio by her great aunt who whisks her down

PERSONAL REVIEW: I liked this book for it's characters, but the plot and events seemed flimsy. The mother was a caricature, the father a cliche. CeeCee was sweet and the people around her were wonderful and colorful, but I never bought that this was a 'likely' story. Too many things were too simple, too cute or too goodie-goodie for me to buy in.

If I could I would go with 4 1/2 stars! This was a sweet look at a young girl finding her place in the world with the help from a wonderful mix of women in Savannah, Georgia. It takes a lot for Ceecee to emerge from the years of stress and residual damage from her years as caretaker to her mother, but the wisdom of each of the women she meets in Savannah help her to realize that she is not who she was, but rather who she wants to be.

3 1/2 stars. Nice story. Glad there wasn't too much drama...had a Secret Lives of Bees feel without the racism.
