I am a huge fan of Mosse's Langeudoc trilogy so I picked this up with some reserve (especially after the mild disappointment associated with the Winter Ghosts) but thankfully this was better than expected. It is much more Gothic in its style of writing compared to her other works which are very much historical fiction with lots of interwoven details and subplots. This was a real struggle to get through the first 150 pages lead nowhere and bored this reader. Round about half way the author signals the ending so clearly that really you are just waiting for it to happen. This book took me so long to read because there was never enough to hold my attention

While I didn't love this the way I did the author's Launguedoc series, I still enjoyed it quite a lot. In particular, I found Connie, the taxidermist's daughter herself, to be fascinating. The mystery itself didn't seem to be that well constructed, but watching Connie unravel it was what made the book enjoyable. ...more
