This was a book that I started several years ago and then lost interest. As it is a popular book, it remained on my TBR list, but somehow I just never found the motivation to pick it up again - at lest not until GR challenges came along for which it was an ideal choice.

I read this for book club. I really couldn't read all of it. But I was able to answer all but one of the questions at the discussion, so I felt comfortable with saying I read this. Yeah, I skipped a lot. haha. The trail was a lot to take in, and it did skip around time-wise a bit.

There are several dynamics to this book and to be honest, I'm not sure if I am giving the correct rating.
First of all, the actual writing of this book was fantastic. There is no denying that. I have read other books by Bohjalian. He is extremely detailed in his expression. He doesn't miss anything. He paints an extremely detailed picture. In some ways, this doesn't allow the reader to use imagination but for a somewhat lazy reader like I am, it paints a scene so vivid, you almost become part of ...more

I'm not sure what my expectations of this book were before I read this. For some reason, it seemed to take me a long time to get through this read. I'm not sure if it was because I was getting ready for the holidays or what. Since so many people liked it, I thought it would be better than it was. I thought that it was more of a YA book than her mother being on trial. Like why her daughter decided to practice in a hospital. Events can be very impressionable in your early teens.
